And the Oscar goes to…

Haven’t seen all films – but we like to quietly judge so I will do that here too. (Only in written form of course). We’ll only go through the most important categories too of course.

Best Picture

§  Black Swan
§  The Fighter
§  Inception
§  The Kids Are All Right
§  The King’s Speech
§  127 Hours
§  The Social Network
§  Toy Story 3
§  True Grit
§  Winter’s Bone
As a deeply saddened man we acknowledge that The Town wasn’t nominated here. All because of one man’s fault. Ben Affleck. For being Ben Affleck. You can’t really blame the Academy for reasoning like that though, but we did hope for another verdict and some balls. Haven’t seen all of them and before I’ve seen Winter’s Bone (which I actually think will be my favorite) I reckon if The Social Network, Black Swan or True Grit wins I’d be the most happy. The King’s Speech will probably interfere though.

Best Actor

§  Javier Bardem, Biutiful
§  Jeff Bridges, True Grit
§  Jesse Eisenberg, The Social Network
§  Colin Firth, The King’s Speech
§  James Franco, 127 Hours
James Franco is a no brainer. Epic performance – and the boy sure has the looks – and is without doubt the most interesting character off-screen of them all. By far. Jess won’t win twice in a row and even though I think Javier might deserve it as much as James, we won’t be too surprised if the Brit walks up on stage, “all shocked”.

Best Actress

§  Annette Bening, The Kids Are All Right
§  Nicole Kidman, Rabbit Hole
§  Jennifer Lawrence, Winter’s Bone
§  Natalie Portman, Black Swan
§  Michelle Williams, Blue Valentine
Natalie will have it. Michelle deserves it, Jennifer should have it. Nicole won’t get it cause of who she is and Annette should probably have been replaced with Julianne as nominee.

Best Supporting Actor

§  Christian Bale, The Fighter
§  John Hawkes, Winter’s Bone
§  Jeremy Renner, The Town
§  Mark Ruffalo, The Kids Are All Right
§  Geoffrey Rush, The King’s Speech
Jeremy or Christian. Anything else would upset me dearly. OK, John and Mark are good too. But other than that… would just be so zzzzZZzzzZZzz

Best Supporting Actress

§  Amy Adams, The Fighter
§  Helena Bonham Carter, The King’s Speech
§  Melissa Leo, The Fighter
§  Hailee Steinfeld, True Grit
§  Jacki Weaver, Animal Kingdom
Funny when you didn’t even know a movie existed before it’s nominated. (Sorry Animal Kingdom, but blame your PR agency). I want Amy or Hailee here though.

Best Director

§  Darren Aronofsky, Black Swan
§  Joel and Ethan Coen, True Grit
§  David Fincher, The Social Network
§  Tom Hooper, The King’s Speech
§  David O. Russell, The Fighter
So. Many. Great. Names. [!!!]. But it’s also funny cause the three that should win should also have won for other films they’ve made. Darren for ‘Requiem’, David for ‘Seven’ or ‘Fight Club’ and Joel & Ethan for pretty much a shitload of movies, but most and foremost, ‘The Big Lebowski’ – hey if Toy Story 3 can get a nomination… (Amazing how much influence the big studios have).

Best Original Screenplay

§  Another Year
§  The Fighter
§  Inception
§  The King’s Speech
§  The Kids Are All Right
Inception. Or The Kids Are All Right. But I go for Inception, you must be pretty fucked up to write that script you know. Construct it. We didn’t quite fully get it but the writer – must – have.

Best Adapted Screenplay

§  127 Hours
§  The Social Network
§  Toy Story 3
§  True Grit
§  Winter’s Bone

That Aaron Sorkin. Man oh man. That kid can write.

FROM THE BLACK WE HEAR--

MARK (V.O)
Did you know there are more people with genius IQ’s living in China than there are people of any kind living in the United States?

ERICA (V.O)
That can’t be true.
MARK (V.O)
It is true.

ERICA (V.O)
What would account for that?

MARK (V.O)
Well first of all, a lot of people live in China. But here’s my question:

FADE IN:
INT. CAMPUS BAR – NIGHT.

MARK ZUCKERBERG is a sweet looking 19 year old whose lack of any physically intimidating attributes makes a very complicated and dangerous anger. He has trouble making eye contact and sometimes it’s hard to tell if he’s talking to you or to himself.

ERICA also 19, is Mark’s date. She has a girl-next-door face that makes her very easy to fall for. At this point in the conversation she already knows that she’d rather not be there and her politeness is about to be tested.

The scene is dark and simple.

MARK
How do you distinguish yourself in a population of people who all got 1600 on their SAT’s?

ERICA
I didn’t know they take SAT’s in China.

MARK
I wasn’t talking about China anymore, I was talking about here.

ERICA
You got 1600?

MARK
You could sing in an a Capella group.

Best Foreign Film

§  Biutiful (Mexico)
§  Dogtooth (Greece)
§  Hors la Loi (Outside the Law) (Algeria)
§  Incendies (Canada)
§  In a Better World (Denmark)
We are quite confident here that Biutiful will win this with ease. Eeeeaaaase I say.

Best Animated Film

§  How to Train Your Dragon
§  The Illusionist
§  Toy Story 3
This is where Toy Story 3 belongs. This is where it can win. But imagine the grand catastrophe if another film wins – then why aren’t they nominated for Best Picture? They’re obviously better than Toy Story 3. Retarded.

Best Cinematography

§  Black Swan
§  Inception
§  The King’s Speech
§  The Social Network
§  True Grit
Anyone could win this puppy but Inception should. It’s breathtaking to watch.

Sound Editing

§  Inception
§  Toy Story 3
§  Tron: Legacy
§  True Grit
§  Unstoppable
The Town. Easily. Oh no wait. Over-dramatic pause to cause [unnecessary] attention. Inception or True Grit then. If only True Grit’s trailer could have been rewarded and only played on IMAX theatres though…

Art Direction

§  Alice in Wonderland
§  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1
§  Inception
§  The King’s Speech
§  True Grit
Same answer as the above. Except for the whole The Town comment.

Costume Design

§  Alice in Wonderland
§  I Am Love
§  The King’s Speech
§  The Tempest
§  True Grit
True Grit maybe?

Film Editing

§  Black Swan
§  The Fighter
§  The King’s Speech
§  127 Hours
§  The Social Network
Inception. Easily. Oh no wait [again]. Great work the Academy. Fucking impressive.

Music (Original Score)

§  How to Train Your Dragon
§  Inception
§  The King’s Speech
§  127 Hours
§  The Social Network
I’ve listened to the trailer music to Inception so many times I’ve lost count. So if only trailer music could be nominated we’d have a winner.

In theory I' d like to write like this too - fetching repeatedly and earnest endeavour to erect a sympathetic article... but what can I say... I delay alot and not at any time have all the hallmarks to touch something done.
